High-ranked German delegation visits Regional Labour Market Observatory (RLMO) in Aswan

A German delegation led by the German Deputy Ambassador, the Head of the German Development Cooperation and the GIZ Country Director for Egypt visits the Regional Labour Market Observatory (RLMO) in Aswan and attends an entrepreneurship education session for girls.

The purpose of this visit on September 30th 2015 was to meet with public and private stakeholders and call on different German Cooperation projects in the Aswan region. Also present were representatives from the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and GIZ-EPP.

The RLMO in Aswan, which has been established with the support of GIZ-EPP, has been inaugurated in October 2014. The eight RLMO working group members, who are seconded by different private and public sector institutions for two days per week, successfully took part in four training modules about labour market concepts as well as qualitative and quantitative research. Currently, the RLMO team is analysing the local labour market according to the PROSPECT method.

During the visit of the German delegation, the RLMO team presented the main findings of the sector synopsis, the labour force analysis and the subsequent survey report on the tourism and mining sector. One important outcome from the labour market research in the Aswan governorate is that women have disadvantages in the labour market. So far there is no gender equality concerning education.

Based on this finding the RLMO and the steering committee have initiated an intervention to promote female employment. The following steps have been taken:

  1. Entrepreneurship education is being rolled out in six technical secondary schools in the Aswan Governorate in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
  2. 16 teachers have been trained as facilitators to promote entrepreneurship for students in their final year of technical secondary schools. The target is to train 300 students in entrepreneurship education, particularly females.

After the presentation of the RLMO working group and having received the technical background, the German delegation visited one class of entrepreneurship education for females in a Technical Secondary School.
